Insurance is still tied to employment, so most of those people laid off no longer have health insurance. 70 years after WW2 and the US still can’t change this. American culture has never been all that good when it comes to following health guidelines from the government. Americans have eaten to obesity, Americans are still in the opioid epidemic.

You just don’t see that angry anti-mask wearing YouTube videos coming from Korea, Japan, or Germany. I don’t recall where I read this, but if you consider empty beds instead of total beds, the US compares even worse. I think they were well prepared in the sense that they got a “heads up” from Europe. This is really the most important factor when you are talking about exponential growth. Acting late will quickly deplete any healthcare systems resources. Mitigating actions need to be taken no matter how many beds you have available.
